Peteris Vaivars is a Latvian diplomat, Asia expert. Right now, he is serving as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Korea and as the non – resident Ambassador to Malaysia and the Republic of Singapore. Peteris Vaivars was born in Rujiena. He earned his first academic degree at Riga Politechnical Institute in 1986 and then he went on to study in the Netherlands in 1995 and the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies of Oxford University in 2006 with a focus on international affairs.
Vaivars began his diplomatic career in 1992, when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia. He served as the Ambassador to Ukraine, was also a non-resident Ambassador to Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Montenegro. Later, he was appointed as the Ambassador to Japan from 2006.-2013. Peteris Vaivars worked as the Under-Secretary of State, Administrative Director from 2000 -2006 and from 2013-2015.
Vaivars was declared as the Honorary Citizen of town Rujiena in 2013 and has received a number of awards from the government of Latvia for his accomplishments and successful management of Latvia’s first Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2015.
